My Students
When Shakespeare said, "If music be the food of love, play on" I doubt that he envisioned out of tune violins that couldn't keep the beat. Without tuners and percussion instruments, my students find it difficult to create music that would be described as "the food of love!"
I teach in a K-5 public elementary school with a diverse population of about 1300 students.
My students are generally of low socioeconomic status immigrant families from all corners of the globe.
The ability to participate in a music ensemble, to play an instrument, or sing, is a unique opportunity for many of these students. We feel that music is an important part of their education and understand that their musical experience goes beyond holding an instrument and making a sound, it actually helps their brains to develop into better readers, writers, and thinkers.
My Project
When students play guitar or violin, intonation is key to not only sounding good to others, but to developing as a musician. When we have a classroom "jam" session, where students are playing chords or notes they have learned, over and over, trying to find a balanced ensemble sound, if the instruments are out of tune, we don't get very far. Likewise, when we are learning to all play at the same time as an ensemble, it is infinitely helpful to have a student or two play a rhythm instrument to keep us on the beat and playing together. With the addition of tuners and hand percussion we will be able to accomplish these learning objectives in a much more timely and efficient manner.
These items may seem like a small contribution, but they will not only have an immediate and direct impact on how my students progress as musicians, they will also enhance the development of music students for years to come.
