Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Hello! I teach in a high needs school. I teach 1st grade inclusion which means half of the students are general education and the other half are special education. They are an incredible group of students and bring a lot of joy to my life.
As part of the first grade curriculum in Social Studies the students are required to learn about health and nutrition. The problem is, there is no curriculum books (teacher manuals) for Social Studies, the teachers are on their own to develop it. I am excited to have flexibility and freedom of creating the curriculum however I have no supplies or materials to teach health and nutrition.
As stated before, all I have is a curriculum map (a piece of paper) that says I am required teach health and nutrition with no supplies or teacher reference manuals. I need a food pyramid to teach my students about what and how much food they should be putting in their bodies and I also need several books about health and nutrition as resources for the children.
I am really excited to teach my students about health and nutrition. Often times I will see my students walking into school eating Oreos and drinking a soda for breakfast. I want to start teaching them at a young age how to maintain a healthy lifestyle and breaking bad nutrition habits. It no wonder students are falling asleep and have no stamina at school, they are putting bad things into their bodies. I want to teach them the right things not only to put into their bodies but how to take care of the outside of their bodies too.
I hope with this unit to start a new cycle with my students. With your help my students can become experts at being healthy and pass the knowledge onto their friends and family who can in turn pass the knowledge. There is no doubt that America is headed in the wrong direction when it comes to nutrition, so it's time to make a change and teach our children how to be healthy conscience.
