My Students

"Is it my day for a computer?" This is a question I hear daily in my resource room. I am fortunate to work in a district that is working hard to keep our students technologically prepared, but due to budget cuts and constraints, this is getting harder to do.

I work in a large, rural Title I elementary school located near the coast of South Carolina.

I am currently serving 34 wonderful students with varying disabilities. My group of 4th and 5th graders have grown so much that I am unable to have the groups of only 5-6 students that I prefer and am technologically prepared for. They love to use the computers in our classroom to access two specific websites that complement the programs I am using to remediate their reading and math skills, as well as to orally administer their general education assignments/assessments.

My Project

My students need a laptop for individually administering assessments and remediation website materials. I have been very fortunate to have already received two netbooks through Donors Choose and now am requesting a laptop to accommodate those students needing a larger screen size. My students love to use the computers in our room for online practice and reviews while I am working with individual students for re-teaching or progress monitoring. I love to have them complete oral assessments and assignments on the computers using PowerPoints with narration or Microsoft Reader to read them aloud to the students. This allows for multiple assessments to be administered at one time without confusing the students or myself. An added benefit is that this allows each student to work at their own pace without worry about slowing the group down.

As I look to the future needs of my students, adding additional computers to my classroom is high on my list of priorities.

As my school loses computers due to failure to operate, becoming outdated or no longer being compatible, our need for this laptop will increase. This laptop will help ensure that my students will maintain access to our online remediation sites.
