My Students

Reading allows students to visit places they otherwise would not be able to see. It allows my students the opportunities to see how others solve problems without violence, and how other people solve problems. These books will allow them to study ecological issues while completing a novel study.

My classroom has 8 students that have individual behavioral needs.

Most of the students are underprivileged and receive free and/or reduced lunch. They have a lot of academic ability; however, due to many reasons, mainly behaviors, they often go overlooked or are considered the "bad kids" of the school. This is not true. The difference between these students and others - they have not been afforded social lives that teach them the behavioral skills many of us take for granted. They are very lovable, unique students that just need more opportunities. Novel studies help to improve their reading ability; this improves their self-esteem and oftentimes their behavior.

My Project

The set of Hoot books will allow our class to complete a novel study with a Newberry Award Winning book. The audio cassette allows them to hear the different voices of the characters. The students stay more focused on a book when it is read by a professional. The Hoot novel will give my students the opportunity to see how people can make a difference if they go about it correctly. These students need to increase their reading comprehension and their abilities to make inferences, describe the plot, identify characters, and complete a character sketch. In completing the Hoot novel study, they will be able to utilize higher-level thinking skills that they might not use otherwise. The Hoot novel deals with an ecological issue. Reading Hoot will allow the students to include science in their language arts class. Therefore, the Hoot novel, the audio cassette and the teacher's book will help them improve their higher order thinking skills while including science in their language arts class.

Please give the gift of 10 Hoot books, the audio book of Hoot and the Hoot teacher's workbook to my class.

This project will give my students the opportunity to complete a modern novel study. Not only will my students be offered the opportunity to use these books, but, other students in our school will be able to use these once we are finished with the set.
