Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The primary job of an Athletic Trainer is injury prevention. Our number of athletes is limited and we need everybody healthy everyday. These students work hard to train, so I want to help them to remain in the game and be healthy for a lifetime.

I have smart, hardworking athletes who want to do the things necessary to stay healthy and remain part of the active roster on their respective teams.

My athletes work hard and almost none are from high profile athletic pedigrees. Most are from low-income families who live in multi-generational housing (grandparents live with and help raise the kids). They do not grow up playing on the best teams with medical care. Some of my athletes will play sports in high school to be part of a team and will then work a career in the oil field or at one of our neighboring chemical plants. Some will go to college while others will learn a trade such as plumber or electrician. I want them to know exercise routines that are easy to implement to alleviate pain and reduce injury so that they can continue to to be healthy and productive individuals. The skills and routines we teach can even be adapted to materials around them such as PVC pipe instead of foam rollers.

My Project

My students need foam rollers and lacrosse balls to stay healthy to remain on the court. Foam rollers and lacrosse balls help increase muscle pliability and reduce adhesion in the fascial tissue. Put another way, this is a type of massage athletes can perform on themselves to help keep them active and participating. Each day during athletic periods we have student athletes waiting to use the foam rollers as part of their warm-up routine. Unfortunately we only have three rollers and cannot spend the entire period waiting for each person to get their chance to prepare properly. We hope to purchase enough foam rollers for each to have a fair opportunity before or after practice each day to use these amazing tools. Our coaches are open and willing to incorporate exercises and activities into their practice schedule to benefit the overall health of the athlete. Our plan is to have enough rollers for one team to use during the warm-ups and the next team can use them as one of their practice rotations.

Low income athletes are sometimes faced with not playing for weeks because their family can not afford to take them to the doctor to get cleared medically after an injury.

By using basic preventative exercises and routines we hope to prevent injuries, as well as rehabilitate those we cannot prevent. Keeping athletes on the court improves our team sports and the overall quality of life for years to come. Keeping an already thin roster at full health promotes team sports.
