Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students I teach are from low income communities and come from historically disadvantaged groups. These students have below average reading levels. With the new P.A.R.C.C. assessment coming up, students need to be able to read all sorts of non-fiction text.
Students are of low socioeconomic status at my school.
Students receive both free and reduced breakfast and lunch. Education to some families comes last compared to the struggles they face. Some students are forced to grow up too fast by taking on adult responsibilities. The school has limited resources that are outdated with old Illinois standards. There is no common core correlated curriculum in place which makes it extremely difficult to prepare students. Helping students be engaged in their education and care about their future really makes a difference. I've seen students reach unimaginable goals and grow intensely in their education and becoming good citizens. Even though these students come from disadvantaged households, they are hardworking students who don't give up! They take responsibility for their education and give it all they have to reach their goals and be prepared for the next chapter in their life, middle school.
My Project
Scholastic News magazines are high-quality nonfiction current event articles that help students be well educated with news from around the world. These magazines are common core correlated and provide students with many opportunities to practice reading skills and build a rich vocabulary. Students will be exposed to different reading complexities, skill sheets, and non-fiction text features that are vital for students to understand. With P.A.R.C.C. assessments coming up this year, it is extremely important to expose students to all sorts of non-fiction texts. Scholastic News not only keeps students up to date with news around the world, but it also incorporates the common core standards students need to master by the end of the year. Students will get the chance to improve their writing and participate in exciting debates this magazine includes. Students need to be able to support their thinking and the debates help guide students and expose them to different sides of a debate.
Scholastic News is important to incorporate in my curriculum.
To help students reach their full potential, they need to be exposed to all sorts of reading materials. This magazine does a wonderful job by providing differentiation so that all students at different levels can read with understanding. Students will be exposed to rich vocabulary, will be educated on current events, and master common core standards with the skill sheets the magazines include.
