My Students

Can you imagine walking into a high school classroom in New York City and seeing kids excited about independent reading? In my classroom, that is exactly the case.

My students come to me with great reading and writing deficiencies, and many of them are scared of reading or have had bad experiences with reading as punishments.

In my class, I try to foster the belief that reading is fun, and although we read texts together as a class, it is essential to be a "reader" and find books you love. Once my students get used to the independent reading program I have created for them, it opens new doors for them and they love reading time.

My Project

I have requested 55 high engagement books for my independent reading classroom library. These books are used by hundreds of students over the years since they are checked out and returned. Students do book talks to talk to their peers about what they're reading and they write journal entries every week about what they're finding puzzling, fascinating or incredible about their books. My students will learn what it means to get lost in reading and how to find out more about themselves through meeting new characters, places and times in their books.

Having a stocked, current independent reading library ensures that my students feel engaged in reading.

There is something special about having new books come in to keep the fire and excitement around reading going. I believe my students deserve new, high quality books of all genres at their fingertips, and this donation you are making will help me provide that for them.
