Help me give my students a gift of reading! Many have little to nothing at home and with COVID, our resources in school are limited in the library with trying to reduce the spread of germs.

My Students
I have previously been a second-grade teacher. I strive to have an engaging classroom that keeps my students involved and excited to learn. This year I have decided to move to a great school with a variety of demographics of families, although the major in low-income families. We are a Title I school and although we have resources, it just never seems enough. As the holidays are approaching, you hear and see the devastating reality some students live in. When I send home homework, maybe two or three students return their work. They explain they don't have pencils, glue, or scissors to be able to complete the assignment. They have to take care of their siblings, stay with a caretaker until late hours in the evening, or just are not encouraged to work on their academics. One assignment given each night is reading for twenty minutes. The students love to read, although it may be difficult, they enjoy the stories. With our libraries following protocols for COVID this year, it can be difficult to get them to the library and continue checking out books frequently. This is where the project started.
My Project
These books will be our personal books to allow the students to continue reading with interesting titles and levels. The students have limited resources. Their desire for reading increases as they grow older and giving them the gift to fulfill that desire can enhance their abilities tremendously! Students consistently asked to take a book home to read, whether it be by themselves, to a sibling, or in aftercare. There are only so many resources available; this will give the students the chance to enjoy a book, on their level, for the holidays.
