About My Students

Middle school can be tough. Socially, emotionally, and academically, there can be lots of challenges for students in the early teen years. For my students, who are learning English while navigating these difficult years, there is an extra layer of challenge.

My students are also tough. They tackle problems cheerfully and with gusto. These kids are resilient, resourceful, and, above all, decent human beings. They make me look forward to getting to work each day.

Recently, the rains from Hurricane Matthew flooded our classroom. Although we discarded wet books and furniture, the water that collected under tiles is created a damp learning environment. Everything in the room feels damp to the touch. We need a powerful dehumidifier to save our remaining books from mold and mildew. In addition, the weight of soggy paperback books bent a shelf in our metal cabinet. We also need a replacement shelf.

This is the first student-led project written by this group of English Language Learners. They have experienced mold in another classroom, and are anxious to avoid it in our room. They have been asking when they will be able to write a student-led project because our 8th graders have written several this year.

Please help my students including Denys, Alexi, Alexis, and Mohsen get a dehumidifier and moisture absorber to help save the books remaining in our classroom library. In addition, we need a metal shelf to replacement one that was bent under the weight of damp books.

Taking care of our book collection will keep us reading every day to strengthen our literacy skills. Working together to maintain an optimal learning environment builds a sense of community and pride in our classroom. My students would like to continue to enjoy our varied and engaging classroom library without concern over damp books and mildew.

In Their Own Words

We need a dehumidifier. It will take the water out. The room is starting to get mold. Hurricane Matthew came in the ceiling. The rain came inside the building, and the books got wet. There was water on the floor.

We threw the very wet books in the trash. Mold is not good. It can make you sick. It stinks. Maybe Violet from The Boxcar Children got sick from the mold. We do not want mold in our room. It does not smell good.

We can use the dehumidifier. We can go to the bathroom and throw away the water. We can put the water outside on the grass. We can take care of the machine. The dehumidifier will help the books. We want to read the books. We do not want mold on the books.

A dehumidifier is important because it can save our books. We read every day in our class. All the students read. Sometimes we read in Spanish. There is one book in Arabic. We do not want mold on our beautiful books.

We appreciate DonorsChoose. We got good books from DonorsChoose. The shelf broke, too. We need to fix that. Thank you for the dehumidifier and the shelf.
