My Students

We are a Mandarin dual language immersion classroom. My students come from such diverse backgrounds. They come to school every day wondering what the day has to bring. They are eager to learn and look forward to coming to school when there are fun projects, high-interest activities, and things to look forward to.

We receive only minimal funding from our school district for technology in our classrooms.

Most technology is provided either out of the teacher's pocket, or via donations and grants such as the Chevron's Fuel Your School program which greatly benefits the STEM education at our school site.

This year, I am teaching 2 classes of 2nd graders, and will have other students switching in throughout the day. More than 50% of the student body receives free or reduced price breakfast and lunch. They have access to our computer lab for about 50 minutes or less a week. Having this technology in the classroom is highly engaging and will motivate my students to learn at their own pace through individualized learning apps.

My Project

Individualized instruction is essential for each child's success. Through the use of educational apps that deliver individualized instruction such as Kids A-Z and Front Row, students can learn at their "just right" level instead of being bored and over-confident when the content is too easy, or feeling overwhelmed when the content is too hard.

Many of these learning apps also track individual progress, so that I am able to see what skills most of of my class needs more practice in, and which skills are mastered.

As the years go by, technology becomes better, faster, and older technology becomes obsolete. Our old first and second generation iPad minis will no longer update their operating system, so we can't download and use the latest apps. Also, for the older apps that we use, the devices keep on crashing to the point where they are unusable.

Upgrading our classroom iPads will help my students utilize technology and increase their learning without the wasted time struggling with apps that won't load or continuously crash.
