Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I work in an urban public elementary school. We serve a low-income population, however, despite the limited resources of our school and our community, we're dedicated to providing our students with an enriching, inspiring academic program. This year, for the first time in the school's history, we have a "Science Lab." In this classroom, I get to teach ALL of the second through fifth graders Science twice a week. In our first week alone, the second graders each got a pet mealworm, the third graders dissected fruit to study the seeds, the fourth graders assembled terrariums, and the fifth graders looked at cells in microscopes.

Even though it's only been one week of school, there's something I've realized that our Science Lab is missing--we need a fridge! I was able to make do with room temperature fruit, and I can keep the silkworm eggs in the fridge at my kitchen at home for now. Once we start studying states of matter or the water cycle and I need to have ice--from 8:30 in the morning until 3:00 in the afternoon--I'm not going to be able to make do with my lunch box size cooler.

This is where you come in. A donation of fridge will allow us to do the kinds of hands-on activities that bring scientific concepts out of a textbook and into my students' worlds. Also, since I'm teaching all of the second through fifth graders, your donation will impact the learning experiences of about 200 students this year alone!
