My students need rocks and minerals seen on the Earth Science Reference Table in order to best prepare them for our state tests.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Just as Neil Young requested decades ago, we must keep on ROCKing in the free world! My students are in short supply of some awesome rocks and minerals, so having these rocks and minerals would let my students see the building blocks of our planet!
I have an incredibly diverse group of students from all different ethnic backgrounds and economic levels.
My students tend to be lower achieving students that struggle through high school and college is often times a faraway dream. They are a fun group to teach, but they can also be a very difficult group to reach because many of them have a poor home life that is reflected in their schoolwork, or are already employed to support their families.
My Project
Just like a great recipe has ingredients to make a delicious dish, the earth has ingredients that make it look the way it does today. And just like a chef needs beautiful fresh ingredients to make the best dishes; earth scientists needs the best rocks and minerals to accurately show how and why the Earth looks the way it does.
Our school district is in a city and there is no close location to go out and observe rock formations or road cuts along a highway. The only way I can show my students the components of the Earth is to be able to give them these samples of rocks and minerals. Once we have them, we can perform all kinds of tests (hardness, cleavage/fracture, acid, streak) to figure out what they are!
Reaching my students is difficult because they do not always see the applicability of what we do in class in their daily lives.
This is even harder in geology because I can't lasso the Earth and bring the whole planet in my classroom. Giving my students the awesome opportunity to play with Earth's building blocks is something they will never forget about science. Being able to see science outside of our classroom is our overarching goal and this will really help to make that a reality!
