Do you remember your first tricycle? Here it comes, all shiny and red, streamers hanging, and nothing but smiles when you look at it. I remember being very excited to have something of my own and how independent I felt when I rode on it all by myself. As a kindergarten teacher, I think it is very important for children to have the opportunity to feel the way I did when I was young. Not only are they fun, but they have many benefits for young children. Chester County has the highest unemployment rate in SC and our school is 83% free/reduced lunch; therefore many parents may not be able to give their child the opportunity for this experience. Riding a tricycle can improve a child's motor control, give extra physical activity, and provide a chance for collaboration or socializing on the playground. The bike benefits the arms and legs of a child's body, which is great because obesity is on the rise. Children must balance themselves as well as use good coordination to steer clear of other students when riding. Also, the students can conduct their own races, which could enhance problem solving and teamwork strategies. At our school we have about 80 kindergarten students and we would appreciate a donation of 10 bikes to use as a kindergarten set during recess. The children would be able to benefit from a tricycle and have an experience in kindergarten that will last a lifetime.
