Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are gifted first, second, third and fourth graders in a low socioeconomic area of Texas. They come from varied backgrounds and cultures. They are talented, imaginative, and creative children; however, they all have one thing in common - they LOVE to learn. Some are talented young artists, others are future novelists, one of them may someday lead our country. ALL of them will need 21st century skills when they leave public schooling and enter into the "real world."
My Project
We were fortunate to receive several Hokki stools a few years ago, and because everyone loves them so, we rotate through on a regular basis so that everyone who wants to sit and move has the opportunity to do so. I have several students who need them so much. I have come to realize this, that if they don't get a stool that day, they will actually go to a student who has one and tell them, "I really need a stool to work right now, can I use it for a while, and I'll give it back when I finish my math." When asked what we need for our classroom, "More Hokki stools" is always an answer.
These stools are excellent for those students who NEED to move in order to focus.
After sitting on one myself, I also found that the rocking has a calming effect, and I believe it sometimes helps my students with anxiety issues to calm themselves by rocking. Lastly, while we use them primarily indoors, because they are plastic and lightweight, they are perfect for taking outside for outside classes.
My students are asking for Hokki stools, with the hope that eventually we will have one for every student in the classroom.
