This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are creative and fun-loving kids. They come from low-income households and have not had much experience with the world outside their small community.
Many of my students don't have the ability to learn online.
Many depend on worksheet packets and whatever books they have at home. Despite the hardships they are facing with school being closed, they are eager learners.
My Project
When I realized that schools may close. I sent my students home with a packet with instructions to not open unless schools were closed. I gave them the last hugs I would give them this year, a packet of worksheets, 1 pencil, and a notebook. Sadly we didn't get a chance to get library books. For many, those are the only school supplies they have had for the past two months. My students do not have smartphones in their households, let alone tablets, computers or the internet. Lack of technology means that only about a fourth of them are able to consistently connect online. However, they are still doing their best to get work done on paper and text me photos.
The items I have selected will help my students continue to learn throughout the summer.
Sadly, I was not able to introduce all the sight words they needed to learn, so the Sight Word book will help them practice the words I've already introduced and help them learn the rest of the 1st grade sight words they need to know to be ready for 2nd grade. The science experiment book will allow students to explore the world of science through experiments. They will be instructed to pick two experiments a week to learn how science works. I've also included a puzzle book and a fun optical illusion book and supplies to help my students develop critical thinking skills. Finally, I've included a book that features one of their favorite characters to enjoy reading this summer. Everything I've selected will help my students to get ready for 2nd grade.
