Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are resilient first graders from an urban Title 1 school. Our school is a TK-8 school that exhibits our core values of community, compassion, curiosity, courage and grit daily through our interactions with students, teachers and families.
The joy of reading flourishes in first grade as they gain the confidence to read on their own.
From the way they pick up a book for the first time to the ones who have read the story so many times that the binding begins to wear. As a classroom we create an environment where reading is something to be enjoyed and excited about.
My priority as a first grade teacher is to foster a love of learning and reading in a community were students feel safe to make mistakes and grow from them. To reach this goal, we need materials and supplies that will ensure that all learners who enter my classroom leave with an equitable education, especially in reading, ready to thrive in 2nd grade.
My Project
My students come in with a love of learning. I love surrounding them with books that are of high interest to them. This gets my students interested in reading and recognizing words in these books. During reading workshop students get to choose the books that they want to read.
Every year my students gravitate towards the same series, Piggie and Gerald and Gossie & Friends.
Students fall in love with these silly characters all while practicing their reading skills taught during reading workshop. These books are cherished and have been used so much that they are falling apart. I want to use these books to inspire, engage and give students windows into reading fluently.
