My Students

What's the best book you ever read? For some of my students, they'll have that moment of connecting with a book that truly touches them in my class.

My students are hard-working, curious and engaged readers, but only thanks to my determination to keep a growing, current independent library.

It is essential that my students (many of whom have learning disabilities and have been otherwise resistant to school) have enough choice to let them feel like reading is a pleasure rather than a burden. Most of my kids do not have libraries or books at all at home, and they have often engaged with reading as a form of punishment or frustration in their elementary and middle school years. Once they enter my class and realize that reading opens doors and helps them engage with issues they care about, their whole mentality changes. It is incredible to watch!

My Project

My students read for two, twenty-five minute blocks in class and are required to read for homework. The expectation is that everyone will finish three books (or more) by the end of the semester. Students then give book talks, plugging the amazing books they finish to get a dialogue about reading started in my classroom. My students need 50 new books to keep our classroom library current including "The Me Nobody Know", "Hollow City", and "I Am The Messenger".

As a teacher, I rely on the generosity and support of my administration, friends and family to help me do my job to the best of my ability.

Schools like mine are bound to the limited resources we can afford, and having your donations of these awesome, page-turners to my library will make a huge difference in the reading lives of my students. Thank you so much!
