Keep Middle School Computer Science Alive and Well!
I need to take a curriculum and instruction class so I can clear my single subject credential in secondary business so I can continue teaching computer science next year.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My seventh and eighth grade students are an exuberant bunch of teens who love to socialize and have fun.
Our students are diversity personified: from painfully shy to audacious; from studious to silly; from spoiled to neglected; from being treasured to traumatized.
When they arrive each day, some of my students are ready to be challenged and others are ready to be challenging. One thing's for certain: there's never a dull day when you're teaching in culturally diverse, economically disadvantaged middle school. Each day is sure to be full of surprises!
My Project
I love teaching computer science! Students have the opportunity to learn coding, as well gain experience with the core practices of CS: creativity, problem-solving, persistence, collaboration and communication. Students find our class a welcome respite from the strenuous academics required by the Common Core. Plus, they are excited to learn how to use G-Suite, type and other common computing tasks.
Unfortunately, at the end of this school year, my temporary credential will expire and I will not be able to keep teaching the class unless I take this business methodology course.
The class is meant to give me an opportunity to learn best practices, design standards-based curriculum and observe other computer science and business teachers in action. Taking this class will improve my subject matter knowledge and make me a more effective teacher. I can design curriculum, deliver it effectively to my students and keep them engaged in learning CS.
No one else on our staff is single-subject certified in CS or wants to teach it. Please help me gain this necessary credential so I can keep developing this much-needed class!
