We are kindergarten classroom of diverse and curious learners. Our students come from varied backgrounds, many whose kindergarten year is their first school experience. We are a lab school for the local university, and are hosts to many student teachers who bring fun. learning, and innovation to our classrooms.
Many of our students' first language is not English and many come to us from disadvantaged backgrounds who don't have many learning experiences to draw upon, but the one thing they all have is the desire to learn.
My Project
Our phonics program has many materials that are difficult for our students to keep organized and accessible. From letter tiles, dry erase boards, workbooks, and journals, keeping their materials easily organized will enable to them to access their learning more quickly and efficiently.
Teaching children to take pride in and care for their belongings helps their social emotional learning and removes any time wasted looking for lost materials.
Children feel more capable when they can care for their materials independently.
Last year was our first year with our new phonics program and taking the time to distribute items at the beginning of each lesson took time away from learning. Each child will have their own seat pocket, labeled with their name. These pockets will hold their materials in an easily accessible way. Student can keep track of their materials and be responsible for caring for them at the beginning and end of each phonics lesson.
The chart stand and media cart will help me to display pocket charts and materials necessary for student learning again making teaching more accessible, visible and efficient. Having the chart stand at a child's height will allow them to easily access the materials displayed there. This will allow them to manipulate the magnetic letters and sentence strips used in our phonics program to help their literacy learning.
