This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students live in a low-income high-needs urban community, which I have loved serving for the past 15 years. We are a Title I school, where 100% of our students receive free lunch. This is a community that has endured the worst that poverty and violence have to offer but continues to overcome every challenge by rebuilding and transforming their neighborhood. This resilience and enthusiasm are reflected in our children.
My students come from diverse backgrounds, and all arrive in my classroom eager to learn, to succeed, and to feel safe and loved.
My goal as their teacher is to make sure these needs are met every day. I want to provide them with every opportunity afforded to others. I hope you will join me!
My Project
Current restrictions translate into increased limitations in our classroom environment. Under these new circumstances, our kids can no longer share class manipulatives which so are so important for developing early skills, especially number sense. It is necessary to provide individual sets to each child for their particular use.
Our kids deserve to have fun while learning, even as they practice ways to keep themselves and their friends safe.
I want my students to have access to manipulatives like counting bears and linking cubes, which provide crucial concrete experiences. I also hope to liven up instruction through crafting activities, which tie into learning across subject areas, from literature responses, to spelling and sight word practice, to math and science. Construction paper, pipe cleaners, pompoms and googly eyes are just some of the basics, and always so much fun!
