My students need new books to keep them engaged in their Choice Reading project and to help them develop a lifetime love of reading.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Becker's classroom raised $780

My Students
The students at my urban high school come from a variety of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. They have varying interests and ability levels and many are reluctant readers. Some do not have the support they need at home, are homeless, or live in homes where education is not a priority; reading for pleasure is not the norm. They desperately need the encouragement to become independent readers, writers, and thinkers, and to discover and pursue their passions.
Reading doesn't just take people away from their everyday lives, it helps them to find their places in the world and to discover what is possible.
This is what I hope to offer my students. "To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark." -Victor Hugo
My Project
Each quarter, my students are challenged to read 501 pages independently. It is not enough to tell a reluctant reader that there are books available in libraries, so I bring the library to my classroom. Students will track their reading and contribute to a Recommendations board to help encourage their classmates to try new genres and texts that they might otherwise have overlooked. Each year, I try to refresh my library to reflect the tastes of my newest group of kids. This year, I'm asking for thrillers like the works of Stephen King, non-fiction texts like The Partly Cloudy Patriot, and some old, worn favorites that need replacing like Devil in the White City.
