Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The dancers of TCHS are a phenomenal group of 10th-12th graders who train daily to hone their skills. As students in a career technical education program, my students declare themselves as dance majors. These learners are physically expressive, socially conscious, and creative individuals. As a community we view education and art-making as tools for empowerment, self-reflection, and social change. Our dance classroom is an non-traditional education environment where students train daily in dance technique and interdisciplanary studies that enhance and inform
Our school is currently closed due to COVID-19.
My Project
Like many other districts, our schools have been closed indefinitely under NJ executive order. On March 16th, we abruptly began distance instruction and learning. My school district has asked teachers to design online lessons to be administered in lieu of face to face class. As a dance educator, filling this demand is even more challenging than a standard classroom teacher. Because of the intrinsic nature of dance, must virtual instruction requires access to technology to partake in virtual class conferences, tutorials, or interactive education platforms (Google Classroom, FlipGrid, Kahoot, and Quizlet).
This transition to distance learning has amplified the educational inequities my students face.
Imagine the student frustration or shame in admitting that they do not have an appropriate device or one that handle the demand of comprehending your instructions on a 5-inch screen? I am requesting for each dance student to receive an iPad and a keyboard for personal academic use while they are enrolled in the CTE dance program at my school. My students will specifically use these iPads to interact with their dance content on the digital platforms: Google Classroom, FlipGrid, Kahoot, and Quizlet. These devices can be coupled with the generous internet service providers who are offering free services for students who are impacted by COVID-19. My hope is that with the successful completion of the program, students are awarded their iPads at the end of the program graduation gift.
While I realize this is a wildly ambitious project to fund, the access to technology is something that I should have been pushing for a long time ago. How do we equip our students to be successful when vast inequity to resources exist both during the school day and at home?
