My Students

How would any child learn in an unorganized classroom? Now imagine you have Autism, and structure is one key to success... how much more difficult would it be for that child if things were not clearly labeled, organized, or structured around the classroom?

These children are 2nd-4th graders in a special day classroom in a public school in California.

They are children with Autism, yet are bright, inquisitive, and eager to learn new things every day. Some love to read books, draw, or play computer games. Some need lots of rest and quiet time during the day. Most kids need a lot of structure and limit-setting boundaries to help maintain their behaviors throughout the day around the classroom. Most kids need to develop organizational skills to enhance their independence.

My Project

With better organizational resources displayed around the classroom, students with Autism would be able to see the structure of the classroom more clearly. Boundaries would be set to distinguish learning places from play areas, enhance ways to turn in paperwork, organize their homework, or even engage in playful activities with an adult in a more organized way (Eggspert Play System can help focus on small group activities for better individual instruction, providing all students an opportunity to learn in a fun manner.) These resources will help to increase their awareness of the classroom expectations and routines in a more engaging way. These resources will help to teach changes and transitions in their daily schedules, a concept that children with Autism have a very difficult time understanding, providing them with a lot of support and opportunities for success in their learning and development.

This project is very important because with support in the classroom to help keep their minds focused, children with Autism will have an easier time to learn difficult concepts.

They will be able to stay on task without getting very distracted by clutter. There will be defined areas to keep paperwork, as well as clear management signals to support their visual learning strengths. They will learn better and use organizational skills to help them become more independent citizens in this world.
