My Students

My students are from all over the world! It's amazing to come to school each day and see the interaction like a mini United Nations hard at work making this word a more tolerable and positive place. In Lowell, Massachusetts our public schools are literally a melting pot from all over the world. We have Cambodian, Nigerian, Brazilian, Iranian & more recently Syrian immigrants and refugees, just to name a few of our ethnicities. We are also an Urban School that meets the socioeconomic requirement that offers our students free breakfast and lunch.

Some of our students struggle with socio economic issues along with emotional and learning difficulties.

My biggest challenge is meeting my students diverse needs in reading. As an ELA teacher there is nothing more satisfying than seeing a child engaged with a high interest book. My goal is to provide current, compelling titles to match our modules in Realistic Fiction, Informational Text, Historical Fiction, Legends, Epics & Heroes & Memoir. In our ELA classroom reading great authors make students become great writers as well. Book Clubs and Independent Reading is the gateway to our learning & success!

My Project

These new current, compelling, exciting titles will hook and keep our book club pages turning during our realistic fiction unit to start off the school year! In order to keep the momentum going after our start up it is my goal for students then to want to read another title in the same genre. In order to do so with such diverse needs and levels of reading from 3rd grade up to high school it is important to offer as many new titles as possible. Once you hook them into reading with fresh new titles they look forward to what surprises will be offered in reading next! I can't tell you what a difference it has made to get great titles in their hands and watch the magic unfold in our book clubs with both reading and discussing books (even outside of the classroom). Students are regularly asking what can they read next!
