My students need mosaic and sculpture tools, materials and safety equipment not in our art budget to begin work on their Keep It Creative Wildlife Mosaic Sculpture Garden
My classroom overlooks a bare spot next to the new music auditorium. Students look out the window, vie for the desks close to the windows for better lighting; and tell me their dreams of what we could do to make a sculpture garden-a place where artist's can study nature and draw outdoors.
Fifteen hundred students travel long distances to attend our Island school.
Our classes are crowded, so working outside in an art studio space would be a welcome change for students to study, interact and draw from nature.
My students have just completed their JR Duck stamp entries and are very excited about working on another environmental art project and equally excited about having an outdoor space they created for visitors and future students.
They have already designed mosaic stepping stones to honor our donors in the garden. They want to make and sell "Mosaic Rocks" for seniors to buy for the garden borders. And in keeping with our school motto "Keep It kind" my students have stayed after school to draft bench designs to present to the school board! They are so excited, they wanted to work over Christmas Break! Our student's are very committed, to the arts and to the preservation of nature, and to working in their outdoor art studio with other artist's. They want a place.
My Project
The glass cutters, nippers, gloves, goggles, grout, and tools will assure students create works safely and professionally.
Students will start in the classroom, cutting glass and tile mosaic pieces for stepping stones and benches. Students will learn to draft and present proposals to the board, write grants and work with nonprofits, seeing first hand how the arts impact society. They have already created our first Marathon/Youth Art Endowment sculpture contest entry which advocates recycling; and building environments in harmony with nature and creating works that promote social responsibility for both environmental and artistic preservation of our wild life.
Students will learn the tile masonry trade and how all artists use math and science. They will learn through STEAM science, technology, engineering, art, and math how to create 3D visual arts. And finally they will see the impact their works have on visitors and students who interact with the artworks they create.
Your generous donations will help us honor nature with art, and join our school, community in an effort to recycle, clean up and protect the wildlife in and around our school and community.
In addition my students and future students will enjoy an outdoor class garden art studio. And likewise make a huge environmental and artistic statement in our school and community demonstrating that art matters.
