Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a Title 1 school. We became a K-8 Dual Immersion school in August of 2012, before that our dual immersion program existed as a choice school inside a regular SEI (Structured English Immersion) school in the Ravenswood School District. Until last year our enrollment was growing, this year our enrollment declined drastically due to relocating to a new site/address which added a commute for many of our families. This made it exceedingly difficult for them as many of them used to walk their children to school every morning as they do not drive, or have any form of transportation.
Our school is a dual immersion school, where our focus is to become bilingual and bi-literate learners.
It is located in a low-income community where most of our students are on free/reduced lunch. Often we see students in the care of grandparents or other family members, while their parents are working multiple jobs. However, I see the dedication and perseverance that our students and families have as they better develop their native language, or are working on adding a second language.
My Project
This pandemic has brought upon many challenges across different ages and grades. Teaching kindergarteners essential values at their age has become another barrier to do across zoom. Learning to share with others is a part of these important values that is taught in kindergarten. Although sharing is a key part of getting along with others in person, in a time where these students haven't had an opportunity to engage with other children their age in a classroom setting, we expect this challenge to become even harder once we return.
As we anticipate a return to the classroom, children will no longer have the opportunity to share materials.
They will need to have a designated space inside the classroom to ensure safety.
Being hopeful for a return to in person classes soon, there is a lot of preparation to do beforehand, as a teacher's most important role is ensuring the safety of her students, especially during a pandemic. School equipment can facilitate both physical distancing and hygiene protocols. Additionally, designated personal spaces where students can keep their belongings safe can reduce viral spread. Although we wish we could still teach children to share in a natural setting, our circumstances no longer allow us to do this in a safe matter. These cubbie storage units will help students have a personal space for their personal learning tools, and maximize the student's safety.
