This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have 16 eager third graders in my classroom. Our school is located in an urban setting and is comprised of approximately 65% second language learners of English. Ninety-nine percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. My students come from diverse backgrounds and immerse themselves daily in the cultures of their peers. Most students who are learning English arrive from El Salvador, Colombia, and Peru. Each child brings something special to the classroom through experience and areas of expertise. They make our school an exceptional place to be through their determination to be successful academically while embracing the many cultures that come together within our walls.
Despite challenges of poverty and language, my third graders are eager to learn.
This project will help them become more proficient students who are ready to contribute to our future.
My Project
As a teacher, I tend to plan my lessons around crafts and activities that will engage my students and help them master each skill. My students need supplies such as construction paper, markers, and colored pencils to allow them to implement art into their lessons and take ownership. My students live in a low-income community and are often sent to school in the beginning of the year without supplies.
These supplies will be able to help each one of my students in the 2017-2018 school year look forward to using new materials to create meaningful assignments.
Unfortunately, our school lacks funding and my students lack access to resources and materials needed to succeed. I believe that each student deserves a quality education, no matter his or her financial background, culture, or community.
