Help me give my students the necessary tools in my office to assist them with developing and practicing healthy coping skills! Counselors help mold our future leaders into caring and productive adults!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a school counselor at a Title 1 elementary school in the South Bronx. District 9 is known for its share of challenges (temporary housing, lack of resources, academic achievement gap, high teacher turnover, etc.) but we do not use those challenges as excuses. We provide a loving and caring environment and have high expectations for our students and we offer a high level of support.
We believe in a strength-based approach and will overcome obstacles together; lack of resources will not stop our school community from achieving greatness.
We look at the whole child and believe that students work best when barriers to learning are removed.
We are a Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) school, which provides evidence-based prevention and intervention practices. In addition to PBIS, we practice restorative approaches; adopting this mindset and practice has increased community, trust, and student achievement and decreased behavioral incidents. We expect our students to be respectful, responsible and caring inside and outside of school. To reinforce positive behavior, we provide opportunities for positive attention and rewards. We need your help in removing barriers and creating opportunities!
My Project
On a daily basis, I see approximately 20 children in my office, whether it is for individual or group sessions, crisis, helping with the loss of a loved one, or celebrating their successes. The materials will be used to help develop social-emotional skills.
It is difficult to help shape the minds and hearts of our future leaders without the proper tools and supplies.
Children learn best through hands-on activities. Journaling increases writing skills and gratitude and reduces stress. Legos are proven to increase communication skills, self-esteem and encourages teamwork. Timers assist us with time management. Fidgets help our students manage their sensory needs. Help get these tools to them!
