This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our students have many struggles outside of the school environment so they do not always come to school with education on their minds.
We strive as a family to provide students with therapeutic supports that help them cope with life and get ready to learn and reach their full potential.
With the help of school administration and personal teacher funds, we have created a sensory room that allows children to decompress. This room is used with 25+ special needs students with a range of special needs and need tactile and sensory support. We also use this room to implement 25+ individual behavioral plans for students struggling with anger management and outside stress factors. They can earn short periods of time to engage with sensory and a calming experiences.
Our school is the home zone for a population of students who are experiencing homelessness. Although our parents are working programs to gain assistance it often leaves many of our students scared, anxious, and angry. For 6 hours a day we are their safe place.
My Project
Sensory rooms are often found in only certain education environments.
Our school is the first in our county to pool professional and personal resources to create a safe environment for not only sensory special needs students but students who are struggling with personal emotional issues.
In the brief time we have implemented this room we have been able to see positive emotional and educational growth in sensory needy students as well as emotionally needy students.
Sensory exploration has proven to increase fine and gross motor skills, promotes problem solving skills and social interactions, and decreases the time a child in crisis needs to be able to calm.
These materials will allow us to create a soothing wonderland and safe place for many students to decompress. The intent of the lava lamp and levitation items are to provide a calming experience for students in distress or overly anxious. While the tunnels and hopper balls allow for release of energy for students who have focusing needs, the tents provide a safe place to "remove" themselves from stressors. The magnetic puzzles promote fine motor skills and increase critical thinking while also allowing for practice of sustained attention and problem solving.
