My students need materials to help them deal with bullies, not be a bully, and stand up to bullies. Books such as "You're Mean, Lilly Jean" and "The Juice Box Bully" will help with that.

My Students
We are the unique and special "Little Tigers" of a K-5 elementary school in North Carolina. The students in our school come from many different and diverse types of backgrounds. The school has about 800 students and a high population of military children who are often dealing with deployed parents or parents away from home. The school also has a high population of children living in poverty. All the children at the school are very special and loved so much!
My Project
Bullying is a problem across the United States. It is said that school based bullying programs reduce bullying by 25%. I would like to use these materials to help reduce bullying in my school by much more than 25%. I am asking for books including "You're Mean, Lilly Jean" and "The Juice Box Bully", games, and a Kindness Curriculum to help with bullying. I plan to use these to prevent it and intervene when it happens. I plan to use these materials in classroom guidance lessons, individual counseling, and group counseling. I plan to hold groups for children who are being bullied and groups for children who are bullied.
School is a place where a child deserves to feel safe and should feel safe.
If a child is getting bullied, then they likely will not feel safe at school. If a child does not feel safe, they likely cannot learn to the best of their ability. I want to use these materials to help the children who are victims of bullying, to teach the bystanders how to help others when it comes to bullies, and to help the bullies as well. Very often the bully has something going in in their life that they need help for. I plan to use books, games, and lessons on bullying with the students at my school.
Statistics on youth suicide show that many of those children were bullied or bullies or both. I want to start working with children at young ages in hopes that they won't be bullied, won't ever bully, and won't ever consider suicide in their life.
Starting teaching children about being kind, loving one another, and having empathy at an early age will help to better their lives. If I help to decrease bullying, children will feel safer at school. When children feel safer, they will learn more.
