My Students
As a school counselor, I have the privilege of working with about 500 students in grades 4K-5. I work with students through classroom guidance lessons, small groups, and individually.
Many of my students have experienced trauma in their lives but continue to have hearts of gold.
We are a Title I school with over 80% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch. We have been focusing on social emotional learning and utilizing mindfulness over the last few years and my students have been better able to manage their emotions and behaviors through the learned techniques. My students love to play games, run and play at recess, and learn new things.
My Project
Many of my students have experienced trauma in their lives which can make learning and managing behavior a challenge. Some of the obstacles to learning traumatized children experience include poor self-regulation, negative thinking, hypervigilance and executive function challenges.
The tools in this project will help me teach all of my students positive coping skills they can use to calm down strong emotions (self-regulate).
The bubble wands will help students practice deep breathing, the punching bag, hand weights and resistance bands will provide a safe avenue for students to expel the excess energy that accompanies anger and help them develop an appreciation for the benefits of exercise on mental wellbeing. The stress balls will be a tool they can keep with them in class to help themselves calm down at their desk without having to miss instruction for a break. Other items will help students calm down during those times they need a break, bop it, play dough, Where's Waldo, rubicks cube, and simon will all be positive tools for them to calm down and stop focusing on the negative thoughts that prevent them from calming down. I will keep everything stored in the basket so students can easily pick out the calm down tool they would like to use.
