Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My classroom is full of vibrant, energetic, autistic, nonverbal students. Autism is a disorder that is characterized by difficulties in social interaction, verbal, and nonverbal communication, as well as repetitive or restricted behaviors. Every student in my classroom is a unique individual, each with his or her own strengths, challenges, and perspectives. My students bring a fresh and unique way of seeing the world. They are eager learners, passionate about their interests, and resilient in the face of challenges. With the right tools and support, my students can achieve anything they set their minds to.
My students need snacks to help them fuel their bodies.
Snacks will help them maintain energy levels throughout the school day and prevent hunger pangs that can disrupt focus and learning by providing a steady supply of nutrients between meals. Nonverbal, autistic students may not be able to effectively communicate their hunger needs, so providing regular snacks will help to prevent them from becoming overly hungry.
Snacks can also be useful to help them regulate emotions and behaviors, especially when they experience anxiety or sensory overload. My students often need snacks because they frequently experience sensory sensitivities related to food textures and tastes, which can lead to difficulty eating during regular mealtimes. They need small, frequent snacks to maintain proper nutrition and manage their sensory needs throughout the day. Due to communication difficulties, crackers, cookies, popcorn and other snacks will help provide a steady supply of nutrients between meals, especially since it might be hard to express their hunger when needed.
