This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My seventh- and eighth-grade students are an exuberant bunch of teens who love to socialize and have fun. My students are diversity personified—from painfully shy to audacious, from studious to silly, from spoiled to neglected, and from being treasured to experiencing trauma. After the isolation during the pandemic, they are still struggling to focus in school and experience both academic and personal struggles. Although I can't solve their problems with anxiety and social interactions, I continue to do my very best to provide my students with coping mechanisms that will relieve some of the difficulties they face every day.
These materials would help my students remain calm when their anxiety spikes: Calm Strips are shown to provide sensory inputs that can help the user slow down, breathe, and reduce their anxiety.
The fidgets can be used to channel anxious energy discretely into an object to help kids stay on task. Also, because we use saws, glue guns, and other tools to engineer projects, they often get owies on their fingers and knuckles. Having more than just the regular bandage strip would help their cuts stay protected while they heal.
One other thing about my students: They are always hungry! I've tried to introduce them to healthier snacks, but those items are not preferred. They are always begging me for hot chips and candy bars, which I like to keep on hand so I can give them a metabolic boost when they need one. I can't afford to provide these snacks to my students on my own though: We would be so grateful if you could help us out! Thank you!
