Help me give my students books to read that are on their reading level that are engaging and fun. Other items, such as a lamp and light filters, will be used to create an atmosphere that is calming.
I have a classroom full of 21 eager-to-learn first graders, and they are the most amazing group of kids. They come to school excited about the day and ready to work hard and learn a lot. They have a variety of different interests and all love to read.
My classroom is also full of students whose families speak only Spanish at home.
My school is a high poverty school in Memphis, TN. Our school is a very large school, but, even though it is large, the students still feel that it is their home, and they are welcomed there. We want it to be an effective learning environment and want these students to have every opportunity available to them.
My Project
These materials will help make a difference in my students learning because this project would help me get books that are on my students' reading level. Books that are both fiction and nonfiction give students a variety of topics to read about. Also, with the flashlights I would start implementing "Flashlight Fridays" where students would be able to pick places to read around the classroom and the lights would be turned off so they would have to use their flashlights to read. Anything that adds to the excitement of reading books will increase their engagement and therefore their learning.
Also, items such as a lamp and light filters would create a calming environment where students would feel more comfortable in the classroom.
I want my students to feel at home and enjoy coming to school, and creating a welcoming environment would help me do that.
