I am a reading intervention coordinator, and my students are kinder through fourth graders who are struggling to become proficient readers and writers. My students work in small groups with me and a team of educational assistants with the purpose of accelerating their learning and catching them up to grade level.
Some of my students qualify for reduced-cost lunch.
Some of them live in challenging home environments. But despite the obstacles in their lives, many of my students will have success in their specialized literacy program and gain lots of lost ground by the year's end.
My Project
For struggling readers, environment plays an important part in their ability to focus and take on new understandings. If a space is chaotic or disorganized, it can distract and throw learners off balance.
Currently, my classroom houses materials for ten instructors as it simultaneously serves as a classroom for about 30 intervention students at different times throughout the day.
The materials requested for this project will go towards transforming the space from a cluttered distraction into a calm area that invites self-control and deep thinking.
The requested organizational materials will serve to bring order to tons of supplies as well as hide them away, creating a more visually pleasing setting. The student materials, like the sensory wands and play dough, will provide learners with a calming corner, a dedicated place where they can cool off and regain their focus.
