My students have moderate Intellectual disabilities as well as some physical and social/emotional disabilities. Some are autistic. They attend a special education school.
My students truly are special, but not because of their disabilities.
They are special because of their unique abilities. They are loving and accepting. They are joyful and fun! They are able to persevere against numerous challenges. They are eager to learn, but require special materials to create a calm and nurturing environment that is conducive to their needs.
My Project
Teachers must meet students where they are and make sure that their basic needs are met before learning can take place. I want to provide a calm and nurturing environment in which students feel safe and enjoy learning. These sensory items will provide my students with alternative ways to cope with stress and anxiety. They will enable me to create a calming area in my classroom in which students have access to items they need. For example, if the noise level in the classroom is too loud for an autistic student or the fire alarm rings, the noise-reducing headphones are available. When a student is anxious, the fidgets and weighted blanket are available and the crash pad provides a safe cushion for the calming break area. I want my students physical and emotional needs to be met so that I am then able to meet their educational needs.
