My Students
My students are seventh and eighth graders with diverse abilities and goals. In my class, students learn reading comprehension strategies, writing, and history. My students are able to complete academic work, but many need more time to process instruction or need to learn strategies so they can get closer to grade level.
Our school is a charter school dedicated to serving students with Autism Spectrum Disorder, as well as other neurodiverse students.
The students at our school have the unique opportunity to receive both regular instruction and specialized IEP services from licensed special education teachers. The school is designed to address the way students with disabilities learn. I teach strategies courses with a partner teacher, who helps our students with math and science. My classroom is about building skills to get students up to grade level. The work we do in this classroom helps students feel confident learning general education content in different ways. We also include social skills instruction and sensory integration throughout the school day.
My Project
My students are dependent on tools to use for sensory integration. Students with autism process the environment differently, and often need accommodations and supports in order to focus in class.
Imagine sitting in a freezer and someone trying to teach you something.
You wouldn't learn much, right? For autistic students, regular classrooms can feel like a freezer. Sensory tools help these students remain calm in class, focus, and feel more comfortable. Students can use weighted blankets to help them calm down, or as a way to regulate their body so they can focus. Noise-canceling headphones help students block out noise that is annoying or distracting them. Leg bands and chair cushions help students by providing ways for them to move without distracting other students.
