This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Last year, a walk through the classrooms at my school was an exciting experience. Dinosaurs sprang from the walls and insect metamorphosis mobiles hung from the ceiling. In my classroom, we build a 3-D model of the ants with clay and depicted an ant colony on an entire wall. Our school is an Expeditionary Learning school that serves the poorest students in our inner-city district. While our students did not have many resources at home, at school we were able to make learning come to life through art projects that mirrored and enhanced our units of study.
Recently, massive funding cuts have made obtaining any supplies impossible. Teachers do not receive classroom money for even the basics and any funding for art materials, as well as our partnership with the local art museum, has vanished. Art has been on of the key ways to enhance students' understanding and hook their interest. Now, even though many of my students list art as their favorite subject, we are in danger of losing any sort of art experience in the classroom.
A few hundred dollars of art materials would stretch through our school year, providing multiple opportunities for our students that would not be possible any other way. Students would learn about lines, shapes and textures and develop valuable insights into the process of creating art. We would use the materials to enhance the students' understanding of our new plant, transportation and owl expeditions.
Your donation will bring art into the classroom. You will make it possible for my students to have experiences they would not ordinary be entitled to because of their lack of resources at home. Best of all, you would teach my students that school is a valuable and fun place to be. Please help us bring art back into the classroom.
