Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Kayaking is an excellent way for kids to learn to appreciate the beauty and wonder of our environment!
My 4th grade students are eager to learn and experience the world around them.
Their parents don't always have the time or money to take them to museums or other educational venues, so field trips are extremely important for them. One important trip they went on was to Ormond Beach where they went bird watching, played in the sand, and also participated in invasive plant removal. This field trip gave my students an opportunity to participate in restoring a wetland.
After this field trip, they wrote about their experience and their curiosity about the world around them has increased. Consequently, they are reading more nonfiction books and some of my students have significantly increased their reading level. In fact, one of my Spanish-speaking students started at the beginning of the year reading books at a kindergarten level in English and has now improved his reading level to a second grade level in English.
My Project
Through MERITO (Multicultural Education for Resource Issues Threatening Oceans), my students were offered an opportunity to go kayaking if we could pay for the bus to the boating center. So I challenged my students to continue reading nonfiction books at or above their reading level and I would find a way to help pay for the transportation. Of course, this has motivated them to read and learn. They are excited to have this opportunity and they have learned so much about the environment and about the importance of taking care of it.
My students need transportation to the Channel Islands Boating Center.
Helping my students experience kayaking through an educational center dedicated to marine environmental education will increase my students' appreciation of the ocean and the need to protect this valuable resource.
