Kaugya’taat Garden: Learning Through Growth

My Project

What makes my students special is their strength, creativity, and connection to the land and each other. They’re growing up in a remote Alaskan village where traditional knowledge, community values, and environmental awareness are part of daily life. But resources can be limited—fresh produce isn’t always easy to come by. That’s why this hydroponic garden matters so much.

This project will bring science to life.

My students will get to ask questions, experiment, observe growth in real time, and take ownership of something meaningful. They’ll explore topics like plant biology, ecosystems, sustainability, and food systems—while also gaining skills like patience, teamwork, and responsibility.

The goal isn’t just to grow lettuce or herbs—it’s to grow confidence, curiosity, and a sense of agency. When kids see they can grow food, even in the harshest conditions, they begin to see themselves as problem-solvers and caretakers of their community and environment. That’s a powerful shift—and it starts with a few seeds and a little support.
