KABLAM! A Comic Curriculum

My Students

Our inner-city school serves a culturally and linguistically diverse population of second language learners. Many of our students are immigrants or children of immigrants, and most come from low-income families.

The kids in my class have plenty of drive and enthusiasm but they're short on supplies.

They need a MacBook on which to lay out the comic books and graphic mini-novels they create as part of our writing program. Thanks to the generosity of past donors, my students have access to Chromebooks where they draft and revise their work, but we're still short on machines that will run the comic making software we use.

My Project

In our writing workshop, students explore a variety of genres, from memoir to poetry to sci-fi. We brainstorm for ideas and discuss techniques for developing characters and conflict, rendering scenes, and smoothing bumpy syntax. We often look closely at a mentor author's approach to craft then students try out the new writing strategies in their own works in progress.

When students decide on a piece they'd like to publish, they typically spend weeks revising, a process which can mean pruning unwieldy sentences, cutting or adding scenes or characters, and presenting multiple drafts to the class for critique.

Once their writing is polished students illustrate and lay out their work in ComicLife then we publish finished books online and print paper copies, milestones that always engage and motivate. Help keep the creative momentum going with a donation to this project!
