This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 2nd graders will continue their learning adventure in the center of a small urban district. Our school is a Title I school with approximately 700 students in grades K-5. The student body has a large percentage of English Learners. We have 85 percent minority students and over 80% percent free and reduced price lunch population. Within this challenge is strength and determination, as our school strives to close the achievement gap while growing confident and successful learners.
Second grade is still setting the foundation for a lifetime of inquiry and a love for learning.
These little scholars are at an age when everything is still new and exciting and their quest to know "how?" and "why?" makes each day a joy to experience. I strive to provide them with experiences that will not only ignite a passion to wonder and question, but will also give them the skills to find the answers they seek.
My Project
Children need opportunities to acquire money sense and the value of earning and saving. In our "must have" world today, they are learning to desire goods but they are not learning about money, how to earn it, the value of saving, and eventually providing themselves with the knowledge and means to have a secure financial future.
Most of my scholars come from homes lacking in many basic resources, most of all money.
As a result, they are not given the experiences with money that are necessary to building a true sense of the value of earning and saving.
With a variety of hands-on resources, like play money, a cash register, books, games, and puzzles, my scholars will have the chance to gain a true understanding of money and how it works in their lives. This will help plant the seed for a sound financial future!
