Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My library services 500 students in both regular and bilingual classes. They love reading, coding, adventure, and learning. Whether it's through recommending them their next favorite book, teaching them a new robot move, or the excitement of a new invention, I try to make the library a sanctuary of exploration and inspiration.

Our students are curious and energetic young minds looking for opportunities to be readers, creators, and inventors.

Our elementary school is one of the largest elementary schools in our school district. We are a Title I school and over half of our students come from low-income homes, which means they often don't have the opportunities and resources available to higher-income families.

My Project

I see our Kindergarten and 1st grade students multiple times per week. They love our story times and exploring stories through hands on activities. These two Bee Bots and supplies to make 100 bristlebots will help us do just that. We already have the motors needed to make our bots, we just need the supplies.

Our students explore stories in a multitude of ways.

First students will use the BeeBots and a floor mat to retell a story and point out important parts. After we explore coding a sequencing, we will move on to some robot engineering by making our own bristlebots in order to make robot art. When connected to a vibrating motor (which we have) the toothbrushes, batteries, google eyes and pipe cleaners turn into a vibrating little robot. We then dip the toothbrushes into paint and have them paint some masterpieces. The students will read How to Be an Explorer of the World and other art books to inspire their robot assisted masterpieces. The ping pong balls and marbles help to further randomize our painted projects.
