Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

In Kindergarten students should learn about the life cycle of various animals such as the butterfly. The best way to teach this is by them visually observing the cycle itself. The children can inquire about what will happen and explore for themselves how this beautiful creature changes. The projects needs very few materials caterpillars preferably one per student and photo paper and ink to print out pictures from the project to put in the classroom and in thier yearbooks. Throughout the project the students will write and draw what they observe as well as discuss with their peers. This project will not only teach the life cycle but will also reinforce writing and oral skills. Students will learn scientific vocabulary such as metamorphosis and commonly used words like longer. About 60% of the students in my classroom are English language learners so the more realia they are exposed to the more of a grasp of the language they will be able to acquire by the end of the year. Also during this project we will be doing an author study of Eric Carle which will include the very hungry caterpillar which we will read after the caterpillars have changed into butterflies.
