Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My K-5 students enjoy making science models in the STEAM lab! The model magic natural colors will be used by third graders for making climate and biome dioramas. They will learn about Earth's 3 climate zones and their characteristics, then select a climate to model. Shades of brown will be used to model rocks, trees, animals, plants, and fungi. The plastic jars and rocks will be used by fifth graders for modeling earth systems and their interactions by planning and building terrariums. Students will present their terrariums and explain how they represent interactions between the bio-, geo-, hydro-, and atmo- spheres!
The ice cube gum will be used by fourth graders as they learn how to design experiments with variables and controls.
They will investigate whether our sense of smell helps us taste our food or in this case, gum! This is one of my favorite experiments to start off the school year!
The giant graph paper roll will be used to make coding challenges for K-2 students. Lengths of the graph paper will be decorated with paths and mazes, from simple to complex, for students to program our school's bee bots through. It will teach K-2 students how to use patterns to spin around, make turns, move forward and backwards. The pencil sharpener and erasers will be used by all students in our shared supply baskets. The lego brick plates will be used during open lab time at recess so more students can build! These resources will support students throughout the school year and get students engaged with scientific modeling projects.
