My Students
A typical day involves disciplined study, a hands-on approach, and a quest to keep things interesting.
My students are mainly African-Americans from East Oakland who receive free or reduced price lunch.
They are inner city students who face many of the problems associated with that designation. Our school is a small bastion of sanity amid the urban streets.
My Project
I have been doing a unit on the history of Black cowboys using this wonderful book, a winner of the Coretta Scott King book award. We meet the Oakland Black cowboys, go to the parade, and I raffle off some rodeo tickets. It is a great way to study a fascinating area of African American history, as well as the lessons taught about "women's work" and what it means to be a man. Unfortunately, my old class set was paperback, and it deteriorated past the point of repair.
Last year the students taped all the books together to begin our unit.
Still, they had to be gentle, and the books gradually fell to pieces. This is an excellent book, and you could tell by the way the children cared for them, that they didn't want to lose a single page. Still, it got ridiculous, and I will have to replace these books, or replace a beloved unit of study.
