My Project

Mealworms are a highly dense protein source of food for many animals. Our chickens and ducks go crazy for them, but they can become very expensive! We would like to try to raise our own mealworms to feed to our birds and maybe even our tilapia tanks. From what we have researched, they are very easy to raise and are pretty much self sufficient. The rolling bins will house the larvae, pupae and beetles in various levels and they will live in the wheat bran and use potatoes as their water source.

Having a mealworm farm will give us another source of food for our chickens, ducks and fish and will be a fun lesson for everyone to take part in.

Who doesn't want to raise mealworms to feed to their animals? I sure do! My students will learn another form of animal husbandry that may not be something they thought they wanted to learn, but will be a great source of entertainment and information in agriculture class!
