Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come excited to learn in two languages as part of our Spanish immersion program, which was adopted more than 14 years ago to meet the needs of the cultural and linguistic diversity in our district. Ten years ago, parents got organized and successfully implemented uniforms at our school. This has helped our students to stay focused on learning, and it has provided a positive learning environment for everyone.

I am enriched and blessed by my students' diverse cultural, linguistic, and economic backgrounds.

More than 85% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

All of my kindergarten students get an amazing and unique opportunity to start learning English and Spanish from kindergarten to grade 12. Twenty-five percent of my students' first language is English, 50% of my students' first language is Spanish, and 25% speak another language at home. Most are bilingual. They share the journey to be able to graduate from high school bi-cultural, bilingual, and bi-literate; it all begins in my kindergarten classroom.

My Project

This year is like no other, students are excited to finally be at school learning in-person. Families what to continue to be involved in what we are learning at school. We are all adjusting to new ways to transition from our distance learning year to our in-person learning. In previous years, our district provided this amazing Scholastic digital and print subscription. It is no longer the case, I saw the value of having students read this weekly magazine at school and then taking it home to share with families.

It is colorful and highly engaging reading material that was just at the right time for Social Studies and Science topics through out the school year.

Families will have access to the digital platform and I will be able to use it as a teaching tool at school too. With this subscription, everyone will be excited and engaged in reading and learning at school and at home. Reading the magazine will count towards our goal of reading 100 books in kindergarten and it will provide reading material in Spanish for all students, as we are a Spanish Dual Language school and not all families have access to high quality Spanish reading materials. The Spanish alphabet books will be a great addition to our classroom library to for students to practice independently letter names, sounds and basic vocabulary words as they become Spanish readers.

The best part of this project is that each student will have his and her own magazine each week to take home to share at home. Students will get many authentic opportunities to practice reading, Spanish and other foundational skills while learning about the world around them.
