My Students
We are going to do amazing things this year... beginning in math!
I have 23 second graders this school year. And they are the sweetest! Six of my students are returning to our school but seventeen students are new to our school and our program. As a result, there are varying academic levels.
Most of the students who are new to our school and program this year are making a jump from first grade math to fourth grade math.
The students in my class are in the Highly Capable Cohort (HCC) program. Students should have mastered their facts in third grade, but many did not have third grade math last year. So while these kiddos are advanced in many ways, they are actually playing catch up right now.
My Project
Imagine how you learned your multiplication facts... The job of memorizing 156 math facts is daunting for many if not most kids, but more importantly, our age-old practice of starting the kids out at 0x0 and marching in order through 12x12 is a terribly inefficient waste of parent, teacher, and student time.
Envision the students practicing their multiplication facts at school every day, in a different way. Students have multiple learning styles so why not have multiple/various methods to practice our facts?
Some of the materials I am requesting include Learning Resources tri-FACTa Multiplication and Division Game, Multiplication Facts in Seven Days: A Simple Method for Success..., Think Fun Math Dice, Multiplication Bingo Game, and Learning Resources Multiplication Master Electronic Flash Cards. These multiplication math facts board games and manipulatives will challenge students while being fun and engaging!
That's where this project shines.
I figure that if I can break the facts down into easily digested bites, creating a logically ordered, daily mix of the "easy facts" and the hard ones combined with fun and interactive games/activities, my students won't have the experience of learning the facts through hours and hours of repetition, endless writing of the facts, interminable recitation of the tables, and Sisyphean sessions with flashcards.
