My Students
Teaching children at home in one of the most expensive cities in the country brings many unusual challenges. We currently have a disproportionate district system of school funding that is generously being supplemented by corporate donations. My students are not among the most socially or economically disadvantaged in my city, so they are often ignored. It is my experience that kids can do anything if you give them the right tools. It is, therefore, my job to get them what they need to succeed.
My Project
My project goal is to provide my students with the basic school supplies they need in order to learn at home this year. Many of my students depend on the school to provide many of the basics like paper and pencils. But since there is no guarantee they will be returning to school anytime soon, it will be up to parents to buy what they need. Although most learning is supposed to be online, the actual work they complete needs to include paper and pencil. The previous distance learning experiment wasn't an epic fail, but it did reveal the problem of students' inability to manipulate the computer, and complete work online. Students were running out of paper and pencils, and parents couldn't get into stores to buy anything. Since I will be distance learning from my classroom, I want to pre-bag some basic supplies so everyone can start together and be prepared. These things will be available for outside pick-up prior to the start of school.
